Good news for Chelsea fans as the club have now taken signing Dries Mertens from Napoli as first priority. Chelsea have been looking for a potential striker who will partner with Tammy Abraham next season after both Oliver Giroud and Michy Batshuayi have failed to impress under Farank Lampard.
Reports from Italy suggest that Chelsea are interested in securing the Belgian’s signature. With Lampard being one of the Instagram followers of Dries Mertens, it actually shows how he monitors the Belgian’s movements. Chelsea have failed to find the rightful replacement for Diego Costa after the Spanish left for Atletico Madrid back in 2018. Recently, The Blues have lost hope in signing Luka Jovic from Real Madrid and it will be a good luck for them if they successfully manage to sign Mertens from Napoli. With the experience he has in football, Mertens seems to be the best striker to solve Chelsea’s goal problems as well as helping in improving young talents that Chelsea have now.
The 32 years old who joined Napoli from PSV Eindhoven back in 2013 have impressed Chelsea staff due to his ability to create chances and score goals. Since his arrival at the San Paolo Stadium, Mertens have featured in 226 games and scored a total of 90 goals in return for The Parthenopeans. He has helped Napoli win Copa Italia in season 2013/14 and Supercoppa Italiana in 2014. With his contract expiring at the end of next season, Napoli would like to make some pretty cash on him than letting him leave as a free agent next summer.
